Increasing Diversity in Cardiology: A Fellowship Director’s Perspective

Background Underrepresented-minorities (URM) remain few in number amongst practicing cardiologists and across cardiology fellowship training programs the U.S. Increased diversity is needed entire field particularly necessary within graduate medical education programs. Objectives This cross-sectional study was performed to identify which strategies were supported implemented by program directors (PDs) increase URM representation, determine entities hold responsibility according directors, quantify representation Methods A 15-item survey submitted all American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited via electronic mail. Results Of 250 programs, 71 responses received (28.4%). The faculty varied from 0-1 more than six, held leadership roles most (62.0%). total 16 respondents (22.5%) directors. Most agreed that important their (85.9%). majority endorsed direct recruitment applicants (60.6%), opportunities for connect with (54.9%) or be recruited fellows (54.9%), holistic application review (67.6%), promoting mentorship (69.0%), involvement applicant interviewing increased members (73.2%). Program allocated major (71.8%), residency (63.3%), schools (53.5%).
